While cults have existed for thousands of years, their influence ebbs and flows with the cultural conditions that may help or hinder their efforts. In this discussion from the tv show 3D Dialogue, Robert Campbell, Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities at the University of Toronto, speaks with me about the history and type of cults in our society.
Explicitly we talk about how our current culture is conducive to the rise of cults, as well as the relationship between cults and religions. We also spend some time on the concept of the cult of the individual, and how that relates to our present-day aristocracy of celebrity.
