Wondering about the White Space

I cover a lot of subjects on my weekly CBC Radio column, and I'm always fascinated by which ones garner the greatest listener response. Something that is particularly interesting to me, and apparently a lot of listeners, is the upcoming explosion of wireless devices making use of the spectrum called White Space.

For those who missed it, or want to hear it again, you can download my CBC Radio Toronto appearance on Metro Morning with Andy Barrie.

And these are some of the articles that came out around the time of the announcement.

If you're a friend of mine on Facebook I have a video on my profile from Newsworld that was recorded in the spring on the same subject.

Convergence of telecommunications and entertainment

I had a "Eureka" question recently. Why am I spending a minimum $225 per month (usually a lot more) on Rogers services for telecommunications and entertainment (wireless/cell/home phone, cable TV, internet). Then I asked myself the question, "In what other ways could I spend that same money?"
Then I started looking around at alternatives and realized in frustration that Rogers, Bell and Telus are holding us captive to their services.

I want complete convergence but it's not here yet!

Communications: I am a mac and Blackberry user, which don't integrate well. I am quite brand loyal to Blackberry but they have to get their act together with mac. I also like the iPhone doesn't work very well for my work email- but why not?

Entertainment: I watch some TV but prefer to find what I need on the web. Apple TV offers me part of a solution but has serious limitations because I can't project anything outside of what can be downloaded from itunes, onto my big screen.

You're the man! You talk about this stuff on CBC and I love it when you do.

Help! I want on integrated solution. I want convergence now...on my terms! Here's my ideal solution:
- love my mac and plan to keep it
- iPhone or BlackBerry that completely integrates home and work emails ...with my mac (I don't care which)
- download any show I want from the web - and project it on my big screen
- get rid of cable.

Am I completely crazy?

Thanks!

Mark
